| Name: | Aoibheann Brennigan |
|---|---|
| Location: | Princeton, New Jersey, United States |
Legal Name: Aoibheann Brennigan
Full Name: Aoibheann Róisín Ní Branagain
Damn Irish Pronunciation: Eve-een RO-sheen BREN-ni-gan
Goes By: Dr. B, Dr. Brennigan, Aoibheann, Eve
Age: 29 (September 14, 1976)
Position in Hospital: Doctor
Specialty: Hematology, killing aloe plants
Picture: Dolores O'Riordan http://www.the-cranberries.de/gallery/dolores/dolores4.gif
Personality: In a work environment, Aoibheann is almost always the picture of friendly professionalism. Her smile, posture and overall demeanor exudes a quiet sort of confidence designed to reassure her patients (and possibly her coworkers) that, yes, she does know what she's doing. In the realm of the hematological and oncological, a modicum of self-assurance serves to soothe patients, and extending a hand for a friendly shake or to pass on a "get well soon" card from a friend can brighten a day otherwise darkened by heavy-dosage chemotherapy.
While Aoibheann isn't openly emotional, she is generally pleasant, even-tempered, rarely voicing a bad word or a tactless opinion. And thanks to growing up with three rambunctious older brothers, Aoibheann is nearly unflappable in the face of some of the crazier doctors residing in PPTH. A few threads of melancholy and mild exasperation can weave their way around her usual demeanor during long, or unusually difficult shifts. However, one would be hard-pressed to find her angry. In the rare instances where she does lose her temper, she tends to cave in on herself until she can calm down.
Outside of work, Dr. Aoibheann Brennigan the Hematologist magically transforms into Eve the Gregarious. Mingling amongst friends is where her professional mask slides off, and her friendly, offbeat personality shines. Her sense of humor is active and dry, and she's quick to consider people a friend.
History: After graduating as salutatorian of her high school, Eve won a partial scholarship to the Harvard School of Medicine in Boston. While she knew she wanted to be a doctor, her choice in speciality was decided when a cherished aunt died of malignant osteosarcoma that had metastasized to her internal organs the year before she graduated high school. She graduated med school in the top ten, and went on to complete her hematological residency at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Massachussets. When an opening in the illustrious Oncology department of the equally illustrious Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital showed up, Eve decided to go for broke, and she submitted an application. Much to her astonishment, she was accepted. After bidding a surprised goodbye to her friends and Boston, she packed up and moved to Jersey.
While her family has always gotten along well by most standards, Eve claims they're right out of a postcard or Hollywood musical -- minus the step dancing, heavy drinking and hearty brawls. Her mother and father are pure Irish; they landed in Boston in the 1960s, and have stayed in Massachussets ever since. Eve is the daughter of Muireann and Niall Ó Branagain. She is the youngest of four, and the only female in the family aside from her mother. Ciaran, Brendan, and Liam are her brothers, from youngest to oldest.
There has been one source of contention in the family, however. Her mother, father, and all three brothers are devoutly Roman Catholic, whereas Eve herself questions and doubts the church. When she stopped wanting to attend church at the age of seventeen, a series of long, loud, drawn-out arguments ensued, which threatened to tear the family apart. Eventually, the arguing, crying and fighting culminated in a compromise -- Eve was to continue attending the various functions that took place during major Catholic holidays. Religion continues to be a sore spot for Eve and her family, though years of absolute compliance has more or less quieted her parents complaints.
Romantically, Eve is the greenest green that ever did green. She lived through her childhood and puberty as an awkward, pimply wallflower, shy and generally shunned by her peers. After her looks had evened out through a few well-timed growth spurts, braces, and the advent of Oxy and Clearasil, Eve had already immersed herself in medical school. As any doctor can attest to, medical school has a tendency to preclude romantic encounters. This is not to say she hasn't dated, but she can count the number of serious relationships she's had on one hand -- in spite of some minor familial pressure to settle down and have 1.5 children before she gets "too old".
Other: Claims to be allergic to computers, the internet, and anything in between. She LIES. Hopelessly addicted to both technology and teh intarweb, she owns a slightly outmoded, chewed-up laptop (which she brings to work with her), and a sleek, shiney Alienware gaming monster -- gathering dust in her living room because she hasn't unpacked it yet.
Two corn snakes, one anole, a terrarium, a sad herb garden on the bedroom balcony, a few orchids, and a tarantula are housed in Eve's modest apartment. Eve loves animals and plants, though she's currently erring on the side of caution, owning animals and plants that she can leave alone for extended periods without worrying about them. Oddly, Eve has something of a black thumb when it comes to raising plants that are almost impossible to kill. (Her brother, Ciaran, keeps a file on the common houseplants that have died under her care.)
For some reason, her 29th birthday cake had "Happy 28th Birthday!" written on it ...
Her father, Niall, works as a supervisor in a construction company, and her mother, Muireann, works at home as a seamstress. (Eve gets hand-made sweaters every Christmas.) Liam, the eldest brother at thirty-four, works as the district manager for the entire Northeastern sector of Home Depot. Brendan, the second oldest, has decided to follow in his sister's footsteps, attending college for a degree in business; he currently works as a car salesman in his spare time. Ciaran, the youngest of the brothers, has his own landscaping business, based in the more genteel suburbs surrounding Boston.
Eve and her three brothers share a typical relationship -- to this day, they live to annoy her, and she lives to annoy them. When the four of them reunite, the collective mental age of the group drops to thirteen, and they wrestle and gossip and bicker until they're all exhausted and grinning.
Ciaran is the closest sibling in both age and relationship, and he stops by for visits whenever he and Eve can tear themselves away from their busy schedules. In spite of being a workaholic, he is cheerful and upbeat, and when the two get together, mischief tends to ensue.
